Maqamat Oxford
Special music night performed by the ” Oxford Maqam Band”. Hailing from various backgrounds, what brings Oxford Maqam together is a deep appreciation for music of the Arab world and Turkey of the 19th to mid 20th centuries. Oxford Maqam, the traditional takht (chamber ensemble) performs with an ear for the more cosmopolitan and improvisatory practices at the turn of the 20th century – a period of musical renaissance from Istanbul to Cairo.

Abdelkader Chaou (born November 10, 1941, in the Casbah of Algiers) is an Algerian musician who is well known in Algeria for his own style of chaâbi music, both as a singer and a mondol vituoso. He is considered important enough as a musician that he was recognized nationally at a tribute concert in 2013, an event that was a “tribute from his peers for a rich career.” His musical repertoire contains both “light” cheerful songs as well as sad, borrowed from the Iberian or Andalusian music tradition. Music Night ” An evening of Iraqi Folklore” performed by Abdelhameed Albannay. Abdelhameed Albannay is specialized in the Iraqi Maqam for 45 years. Across the Arab world, maqam refers to specific melodic modes. When a musician performs maqam performances, the performer improvises, based on rules. There are a number of different maqams, each with its own mood and characteristics. There are between fifty and seventy maqams, many of which have sub-styles.

Sabina Antonini Dr Sabina Antonini is the Director of the Italian Archaeological Mission in Yemen for Monumenta Orientalia (Rome). From 1984 to 2013, she was the archaeologist and principal art historian for the mission’s excavations. Since 2012, she has contributed to CNRS (Paris) archaeological efforts in Ethiopia and Saudi Arabia. She is the author of 9 monographs and over fifty articles on South Arabian Archaeology and Art History. Antonini received her PhD from the University of Naples L’Orientale.
