In 1919, a handsome young British officer walked into a bank in Marseille, he asked a young girl her name. A week later he sent a cable to ask her to marry him. So began a marriage that would take Colonel Dickson and his wife Violet to pre-oil Kuwait, their beloved home, for the rest of their lives. It is through recent interviews of surviving friends and authors, access to academic and personal archives, and her autobiography Forty Years in Kuwait that this unique account of the life of Hajjiyah, Dame Violet Dickson, Um Saud, will be told.
