Maan Madina Lecture held on April 20,2017 at Columbia University in New York

The visit of Sheikha Hussa al-Sabah to USA started with a visit to Columbia University in New York to attend the 2017 Maan Madina Lecture held on April 20,2017. This fund was established in 2015 by Dr. Marilyn Jenkins-Madina, Curator Emerita of Islamic Art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The fund is named after the memory of her husband, the late Maan Z. Madina ( 1926-2013). Professor Madina joined the Columbia University Department of Middle Eastern and Asian Languages and Cultures in 1958.
The Lecture was presented by Salim Tamari, Professor of Sociology( Emeritus) at Birzeit University and Adjunct Professor at the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies, Georgetown University. Prof. Tamari is widely considered to be the foremost historical sociologist of Palestine. His Lecture was entitled ” A Luminary of the Arab Cultural Renaissance: Mohammad Kurd Ali and the Divided Syrian Intelligensia, 1880-1920″
The lecturer was introduced by Timothy Mitchell, Professor and Chair, Department of Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies.
