al-Fann: Art from the Islamic Civilization from the al-Sabah Collection exhibition in the Italian capital, Rome

The Kuwait and Italian flags flutter together above the entrance of the Scuderie Del Quirinale, the museum that hosted the al-Fann: Art from the Islamic Civilization from the al-Sabah Collection exhibition in the Italian capital Rome. Representatives from both Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah and the National Council for Culture, Arts, and Letters invited by their Italian counterparts to the opening reception in an effort to continue to strengthen cultural ties between the two countries. The exhibition is under the patronage of His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah and His Excellency the Minister of Information, and the Head of the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters, Sheikh Salman Sabah Salem Al-Humoud Al-Sabah.

Prof. Finbarr Barry Flood. “Faces in Flower: Redrawing the figure in early modern Islamic art”

Prof. Finbarr Barry Flood’s lecture on “Faces in Flower: Redrawing the figure in early modern Islamic art”.

Professor Finbarr Barry Flood is William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of the Humanities at the Institute of Fine Arts and Department of Art History, New York University. He published a book on Islamic architectural history and historiography, cross-cultural dimension of Islamic art, image theory, technologies of representation, and Orientalism.

His lecture considered a number of rare but visually striking images in which human figures were represented as, or transformed into, flowers.

Embassy of Hungary: “Ewald Brass Quintet”

“Ewald Brass Quintet” , at Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah’s Amricani Cultural Centre.

The Ewald Brass Quintet is a group of young people who are perhaps the most talented wind musicians of Hungary. The members of the ensemble are Levente Bakó (trumpet), Tamás Tarkó (trumpet), András Kovalcsik (French horn), Péter Magyar (trombone) and Attila Peresztegi (tuba). The group is open to all styles and trends, to lighter and more serious genres – their only criterion is quality.

Souren Melikian

Visiting scholar Souren Melikian studying metalwork from the Eastern Islamic lands (found in the al-Sabah Collection at Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah’s Collection Office). Dr. Assadullah Souren Melikian-Chirvani is the Emeritus Research Director at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in Paris and Research Director at the Aga Khan Trust for Culture. He is also Curatorial Director for the Aga Khan Museum and one of the world’s leading scholars of the cultural history of eastern Islamic world. He is a specialist in metalwork and Persian painting and has written many academic articles and books, most notably Islamic metalwork from the Iranian world.
